Deep Dive into Our Red English Wine Portfolio

Our English red wines are crafted with meticulous attention to detail, from vine to bottle. At Bolney Wine Estate, we employ innovative techniques such as cold-soaking Pinot Noir grapes prior to fermentation and using specific yeast strains to enhance fruit and spice characteristics. Each wine undergoes malolactic fermentation to add smoothness and complexity, with some wines maturing in oak barrels to impart additional depth and character.

English Pinot Noir

Our English Pinot Noir is an elegant, medium-bodied wine with mouth-watering flavours of blackcurrant and ripe fresh fig, complemented by notes of dark cherry and white pepper. This wine’s silky texture and good ageing potential allow for the development of more complex fruit flavours over time.

The Pinot Noir grapes were cold-soaked before undergoing malolactic fermentation. A portion was matured in oak before blending and filtration, adding depth and complexity. This versatile wine pairs beautifully with dishes featuring blackcurrant leaves, ripe figs, dark cherry, and white pepper. It is ideal with roasted poultry, mushroom risotto, and lighter meats.

Our Pinot Noir has received numerous accolades, including a Gold at the Wine GB Awards 2019, and several Silver and Bronze awards from the International Wine Challenge and International Wine and Spirits Competition.

Dark Harvest

Our Dark Harvest is a well-balanced Sussex red wine that offers a delightful blend of red and black fruit flavours, with subtle smoky notes adding depth and complexity. The wine’s character is enhanced by the influence of oak, providing a sophisticated tasting experience. Similar in style to Cabernet Franc, this wine is ideal with pizza, beef ragu, and souvlaki, with its rich fruit and smoky notes complementing a variety of hearty dishes. Dark Harvest has been recognised with a Bronze at the Wine GB Awards 2021.

Lychgate Red

Choose the Lychgate red for a rich and complex inky purple red wine with flavours of ripe stone fruits, spice, and warming herbaceous notes. Deep flavours of dark chocolate and black olive tapenade provide a long, fresh, and soft finish. The fruit was fermented at 24°C with pump-overs thrice daily, and yeast strains were selected to accentuate black fruit and spice characters. Full malolactic fermentation in the tank and micro-oxygenation were used to increase suppleness.

Similar in style to Cabernet Franc, this wine pairs perfectly with slow-cooked pork belly, rich beef ragu, and roasted tomato and garlic bean stew, as well as souvlaki with rich garlic sauce. Lychgate Red has received a Silver at the UKVA English and Welsh Wine of the Year Competition 2014.

Cuvée Noir

For a unique, traditional sweet sparkling red wine featuring aromas of red cherry, redcurrants, and sweet blueberries, discover our Cuvée Noir. On the palate, it offers a creamy richness and full-bodied mousse packed with ripe summer fruits, with a hint of sweet spice on the finish. The hand-picked Dornfelder grapes were fermented on the skins in stainless steel for 4-5 days, underwent malolactic fermentation, and were matured in barrels. The wine was then aged on lees for four years after bottle fermentation with Champagne yeast.

Perfect with rich game dishes, BBQ meats, salami, cheese, and even sweeter dishes like bitter chocolate desserts and Christmas pudding, Cuvée Noir has been awarded a Bronze at the International Wine Challenge 2018.
