Every year, from the time the vines are no longer dormant, to the moment we’ve finished harvesting, we fret about the weather.
At the moment, however, we are pleasantly surprised! The weather has been kind to us during bud burst, allowing the shoots to start well with the sunny weather we had. The vines have flowered early, which means they will have more time to ripen this summer. While we could have done with more sun during the early part of flowering, it was a relief that we had mostly dry days!
This is important as it allows the pollen to disperse and pollinate the majority of the flowers, leading to a good fruit set and a good size crop as grapes will only develop from pollinated flowers. The current hot weather we are having is great for the grapes as they need a good amount of sun during their growing season to ripen fully.
Of course, we still have to hope and pray the lovely warm weather will continue and that we get a reasonable amount of rain here and there to truly get the full benefits. At the same time we hope that, as the grapes develop, we don’t get large amounts of rain as this can lead to the grapes absorbing too much water and causing them to split. When the skins break it provides a point of entry to which disease could get into the berries.
Our dedicated vineyard team, led by Manager Sue Osgood, will keep on assessing the progress of the vines until we are ready to harvest later this year. We usually start harvest in September and finish in October, by which time we’ll know what grapes we have to work with in the Winery!
