July’s an exciting month in the vineyard where ‘fruit set’ has taken place (the process of the flowers turning to grape berries), and the vines are growing healthily. That’s good for their ability to produce the energy to support the crop, but that energy needs to be managed and directed to the fruit.
We are now coming to the end of the manual work – lifting wires to support the large canopy – and we’ve just started to trim the vines and ‘strip’ the leaves from around the fruit to allow the sun and the air to get to them.
Next, we will undertake a bunch count (indicative samples – not every one of course!) to gauge the likely crop and to help plan harvest and to allow the winery prepare.
The vineyard is also brimming with beautiful wildflowers over in our Pookchurch site. Here at Bolney our guided by natures ethos is encouraged in everything we do, which is why we try and encourage wildflowers and insects in the vineyard.
So after months of intensive hard work, much of it manual, it’s only a matter of weeks before the earlier varieties will have ripened and harvest will start!
