How did you start Harvey & Sons? And why?
Harvey and Sons was founded in 1790 by John Harvey, and it is the oldest independent brewery in Sussex. Originally distributors of spirits such as ports, sherries, and clarets in the late 18th century, John Harvey went on to purchase the Bridge Wharf site with in which we still brew today. Since then Harvey’s Brewery has remained under the family custodianship of seven generations of direct descendants right up to this day, supplying beers to satisfy the tastes of Sussex and beyond for 230 years.
What’s your favourite thing about what you do?
Being an eighth-generation member of the Harvey’s family, I have grown up fascinated by the brewery and its heritage which lead me to naturally gravitate towards working there once I left school. I have been lucky enough to enjoy a number of roles at Harvey’s; from warehouse picking and forklift driving to working as a drayman delivering the beer, journeying through to completing my undergraduate degree and joining the company sales force. It truly is a wonderful company to work for and as cliché as it sounds, we are like one big family.
Why do you like working with Bolney?
Working with Bolney has been an absolute pleasure right from the get go. They have a great selection of Harvey’s beers in their shop which really compliment the superb food and wine offering. Meeting members of staff and seeing the vineyard was amazing, and you can really feel the passion and the knowledge they have for their craft. They have done a fantastic job at building a great brand and reputation and we look forward to continue working with them going forward.
Can you give us a quote on why you enjoy supporting local Sussex Businesses?
Being an independent brewery with over two centuries of heritage in an ever globalising world, we feel it is extremely important to protect and support local businesses. Environmental sustainability is at the heart of our ethos at Harvey’s, and we source all raw materials as locally as possible helping to support farmers from Sussex, Surrey, and Kent. Harvey’s also send their spent grain to Plumpton College where it is used to feed the dairy herds, and we are told this attributes to 2.5 million litres of milk production every year. We are proud to work with Bolney Wine Estate and other Sussex producers to offer some of the country’s finest goods and look forward to doing so for many more years to come.
