How to select the best wines for your picnic

We’ve just launched our delicious picnic boxes, packed full of locally sourced ingredients and Bolney produce for you to enjoy at home.

Now that you’ve got your picnic food sorted, it’s time to dig out your finest picnic rug and choose the perfect picnic wine. The question is, ‘which summer tipples make the perfect picnic pairing?’

Below we've highlighted our top wine picks and suggested which picnic boxes to try pairing them with.

Rosé Picnic Wines

Lychgate Rosé
Pairs perfectly with our classic or cream tea picnic box.
A delicate and fresh Rosé in style, with a coral pink colour. Aromas of strawberry, red apple and raspberry lead to a refreshing palate of red fruits with undertones of vanilla, making it a perfect pairing for the fresh strawberries and raspberry and white chocolate fudge in our cream tea. The creamy sweetness is also good match with the salty tangy flavours of the blue cheese in our classic picnic. Plus, despite being a quite fatty meat, the red fruit flavours of this wine compliment the richness of the salami.

Cuvée Rosé
Pairs perfectly with our classic or cream tea picnic box.
The balanced, fresh acidity in this wine cuts through fatty foods beautifully. The red fruit flavour/character from the Pinot Noir grape and the bread/brioche notes from the yeast compliments cheddar, bringing out the creamy richness of the cheese. It also is the perfect wine pairing for desserts featuring red berries – making it stylish choice for pairing with our cream tea.

White Picnic Wines

Estate Bacchus
Pairs perfectly with our classic picnic box.
This wine has savoury notes of white pepper and citrus undertones with a floral finish, which goes well with hard cheddar cheeses.

Pinot Gris
Pairs perfectly with our classic picnic box.
The notes of Pear, Citrus, Honeysuckle and fresh acidity work well when eating rich food, so it is a great match for the elements in our classic picnic.

Blanc de Blancs
Pairs perfectly with our classic picnic box.
Lively fresh acidity cuts through fatty and rich foods very well and keeps the palate beautifully fresh. This vintage has lots of yellow fruit character, floral notes, and wonderful yeasty undertones that work well with cheese and salty or smoked foods.

Bolney Bubbly
Pairs perfectly with our classic picnic box.
Delicious flavours of honeysuckle, elderflower, brioche and zesty citrus help cut through fatty and salty foods. Amazing with cheese.

Red Picnic Wines

Pinot Noir – Made to be Vegan Friendly
Pairs perfectly with our classic or vegan picnic box
The red cherry fruit character in this wine naturally compliments pork, duck and game. The light elegance of this wine does not overpower, so a good fit with lighter, less richly flavoured foods, especially Brie!

Cuvée Noir – Made to be Vegan Friendly
Pairs perfectly with our classic or vegan picnic box
This wine is has weet flavours of red cherry, redcurrants and blueberries with very soft tannins and balanced acidity, that make it a good compliment to real summer fruits! It has good structure and complexity and goes very well with smoky food like the Applewood cheese in our vegan picnic box. Drink chilled.
